This Sunday we commissioned people into eleven vocational spheres to live as a gift in the name of Jesus. The commissioning was set up by this sermon on the gift of Jesus and our gift to the world.

The Arts and Other Creative Fields

In your work, you bear the image of God by creating wonder and beauty; by expressing truth in ways that speak to both the mind and the heart. May God bless your imaginations, voices, and hands as you use them to create things that are good, true, and beautiful. As you continue in your work, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Business and Industry

In your work, you bear the image of God by leading and serving in ways that promote the prospering of individuals and families, the flourishing of cities, and the health of nations. May God bless you with entrepreneurial dreams, courage to lead, humility to serve, favor in relationships, and success to bless others far beyond you. As you continue in your good work, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Building Professions–Engineering, Architecture, and Construction

In your work, you bear the image of God by ordering, developing, and building things from the stuff of the earth. You create safe and beautiful places for people to live out their lives. You develop the physical things that allow others to flourish. May God bless you with clear minds and steady hands to execute the vision and the details of your work with excellence. As you continue in your good work, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Children

Dear children, you may not think of it as work, but being a child is a great work God has given you to do. When you do it well you reflect what God is like by listening, growing, exploring, and loving your parents and siblings. May God bless you with curiosity, a willingness to trust the parents and adults working for your good, and a compassionate heart that looks for ways to love and support your family. As you continue in the good work of being a child, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Education

In your work you bear the image of God by contributing to the holistic growth of children, youth, and adults with whom you work. May God bless you with love for each student, wisdom to communicate concepts effectively, and courage to make decisions that will maximize the potential of the schools where you work. As you continue in your good work, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Healthcare and Medicine: Physical, Mental, and Emotional

In your work you bear the image of God by caring for the physical, mental, and emotional needs of others. You fight to push back the effects of diseases and disorders and to promote healthy bodies, minds, and souls. May God bless you with capacity to engage the pain of others, skill and wisdom to help them, and patient love to walk with them toward healing and wholeness. As you continue in your good work, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Non-Profit and Church

In your work you bear the image of God by working for justice, hope, and the flourishing of all people. You devote yourselves to seeing the good news of Jesus take root in our world and people’s hearts. May God bless you with inspiration and vision, discipline and love, as you lead organizations and people into the fullness of being God’s image-bearers in this world. As you continue in your good work, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Parents and those Caring for Parents

As God revealed himself to us as a Father, in your work you bear the image of God as you walk with children toward maturity and walk with parents who are moving into the twilight of life. May God bless you with love, patience, wisdom and courage as you nurture those God has given into your care. As you continue in your good work, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Civil Servants and others in Service-Oriented Work

In your work you bear the image of God by serving people, just as Jesus said the greatest in his kingdom would be those who served. May God bless you with courage in the face of fear, humility when there is conflict, confidence when you’re not treated well, and perseverance when you struggle to keep going. As you continue in your good work, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Students

In your work as students you bear the image of God in many ways–growing in wisdom and knowledge, doing good work, and contributing to the overall good of your schools. May God bless you with diligence to give your best every day and courage to make your schools better places because you are there. As you continue in your good work, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Technology

In your work you bear the image of God by connecting and protecting people, developing products that benefit society, and managing a sector that has a tremendous impact on the world. May God bless you with wisdom, discernment, creativity, and joy in the daily decisions and developments for which you’re responsible. As you continue in your good work, offer yourself as a gift to the world in the name of Jesus.

Don’t have volunteers on here, but make a statement at the beginning about how this work may be paid or unpaid.
